Element Labs, Inc. set the stage for the 49th Annual Grammy Awards last Sunday. Versa® TUBEs HD spanned the stage, displaying images and text above performers at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Lighting designer Bob Dickinson and Production Resource Group (PRG), called on Element Labs to create a large, single array of 792 one meter Versa TUBEs to suspend above the entire width of the stage. This was accomplished using 22 rows of Versa TUBEs, each 36 Versa TUBEs in length. They were attached with standard Element Labs hardware to custom curved frames fabricated by PRG, then split into five separate sections that were loaded into the venue and connected together.
The system was driven by Element Labs D2 processors being fed from a Pandoras Box Media System with a DVI over fiberoptic connection. Content was delivered by the media server and live feeds from the video truck.
"One of the unique features of this show was the application of Versa TUBEs to display text," says Rich Pierceall, Director of Sales and Marketing for Element Labs. "It's a rather unusual and, as we saw, effective use of the product."
